What is Sprigs Plant Company?
Sprigs Plant Company sells a variety of individual plants including house plants, aquatics, succulents, and even planters. They have a small shop located in Bakersfield, CA, and a website that they sell their plants on as well. Their online and in-person stores look really great on their own, however, what really intrigued me about them was their social media presence.
Sprigs & New Media
Sprigs Plant Co. began their journey into new media in February of 2020 and has created quite the following on Instagram. As a small local shop in Bakersfield, Sprigs has been able to reach a much larger audience than they normally could have without social media. Starting by selling plants out of their shop in Bakersfield Sprigs developed enough interest in their plants that they were able to create a website that allows customers from (almost) anywhere to order their plants.
These days, in the age of new media and the age of online shopping, it is hard to be a new company and be successful without using some form of social media. Sprigs was smart enough to use social media from the very beginning. They have gained a large following specifically on Instagram. With 2,042 followers to date, Sprigs has done a fine job on social media especially considering they have only been around for about a year.
In addition to Instagram, Sprigs is also active on FaceBook and even has options to share your purchases of their plants on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest when you buy on their website (pictured below).
A Closer Look: Instagram
What I think Sprigs does really well is their Instagram (pictured below on the left). Instagram is all about sharing photos that are pleasing to the eye. In this case, Sprigs shares beautiful photos of their plants that are pleasing to the eye of their consumers. All of the plants that Sprigs sells are ornamental, so they really need to sell the look or aesthetic of their plants, and they do. With well-lit and perfectly designed photos, Sprigs shows off their mad “growing skills”. They even make an effort to keep their photos interesting by including people and pets in the photos of their plants. What I like about the photos is that they do a great job at showing their customers how they can use their plants to brighten up their homes and how they can “style” them around the house. More and more people are looking to buy plants for their homes since more time is being spent at the home during this pandemic. Sprigs Plant Co. could not have come about in a better time. A time of being at home and the time of new media.
Increasingly, Instagram has become a place for people to shop. With the addition of the “shop” button, Instagram has allowed brands to sell their products on the app. Sprigs has taken full advantage of this option. They even have “shop” tags on some of their posts that highlight plants that can be bought on Instagram. Sprigs also makes an effort to give every name that each plant is known by when they post a picture of them and they make sure to add in any fun facts about that plant as well. My favorite plant that they most recently posted is the Calathea “Zebrina” houseplant. This plant has really cool wide leaves with a little bit of a “zebra” print (pictured bottom right). It is also the perfect size for any room, I just might have to order it!
Sprigs and Other New Media
While Sprigs has the largest presence on Instagram, they also have a FaceBook page that they maintain (home page pictured below). Aside from the special few links that they share, most of the FaceBook posts are the same as the Instagram posts. What is cool about the FaceBook page is that Sprigs is able to showcase much more info about them. From a map with directions to a list of people that have “checked-in”, their FaceBook page has a lot to offer. Yet, I do still see room for improvement on the page. In order to boost FaceBook, I think posting more than just what gets posted on Instagram would be beneficial. Facebook tends to be for more than just a single picture. So maybe adding albums of pictures and more informational or “fun facts” about their plants would help in creating a greater interest.
Facebook and Instagram are always great places for businesses to start, after all, they are the most popular platforms. Moving forward, I think it would be great for Sprigs to explore more platforms that they can use to promote their company. As much as I hate to say it, I think TikTok can be a really valuable platform for businesses that cater to younger people. Sprigs Plant Co., I'm sure caters to a wide range of people however, I think people on TikTok would absolutely love some cute/artsy plant videos. What is so great about TikTok is that anybody can go viral, and pretty easily too. I have personally seen the impact that TikTok has had on so many companies, a lot of Ag companies too! Being well-liked on TikTok has also correlated to an increase in following on other platforms as well. My point is, TikTok should not be overlooked as a valuable platform for people to promote their businesses.
We Love Plants!
If there is anything I have noticed while looking at Sprigs Plant Co. is that people love plants! Sprigs has had great interaction from their followers in the comment section of their posts and customers even have better means of communicating with the Sprigs team through direct messages. Using new media like Instagram and Facebook has made it so much easier for people to find plants that they like, and from small businesses too! Social media allows us to see that there are more choices out there than just big businesses. So now, instead of heading over to Green Acres for plants, check out Sprigs Plant Co. or other small plant businesses!
