Ag Influencers: NY Farm Girls

 I believe in the power of agriculture and showing people the power and importance it has is something that is very important to me. This is a reason why I chose to be an ag communications major. I always thought things like, ‘why is ag not trendy’ or how come people who are passionate about agriculture and sharing that on social media are not popular or considered influencers really?’. I have been thinking about this a lot recently and did some research. When doing some digging I stumbled upon the NY Farm Girls on Instagram.

ABOUT:

The NY Farm Girls or NYFG are three sisters whose purpose is to “agvocate” and change the future of agriculture. They grew up on their family's dairy and crop farm in north upstate New York and are passionate about shining a light on the day-to-day task and life of being in the ag industry. They are active on Instagram, Facebook, Youtube, and TikTok.

INSTAGRAM:

On Instagram,NYFG has gained a following of over 85 thousand and posts a variety of content. From livestock to tractors and from dressed up to dressed down, they show it all. Something I think that these girls do very well is their consistency and aesthetic. The idea of being trendy and aesthetic always seemed so far-fetched to me and was something I wrestled with being someone who loves the trendy and aesthetic Instagram pages and lifestyle in general. These girls do not allow the fact that they are passionate about age and the consent of their page to affect this. Their feed is well organized and looked extremely aesthetically pleasing with all of the photos being edited the same way and in a cute and appealing way. I think that while this may not be important to some people, I have become increasingly more important to younger generations, which is the audience that they are trying to tap into. 

PODCAST:

Instead of featuring all three sisters on the podcast it instead is hosted by only two of the sisters, Evelyn and Claudia. Their first episode aired in June of 2020 and they upload anywhere from 2-3 times a month. They talk about their day-to-day lives and issues that they have come across or find important in the agricultural industry. They have also had guests on the podcast such as local dairy farmers, their other sister, photographers, and other industry professionals. They have a very positive and upbeat energy that is fun to listen to and encouraging. On Spotify, you cannot see monthly listeners, but regardless, I think that these girls are doing well on the podcasting front. From information learning in this class, I would recommend that NYFG create an uploading schedule and promote their podcast. 

FACEBOOK:

On Facebook, NYFG has 24 thousand likes and almost 26 thousand followers. Thie Facebook seems to be an extension of their Instagram where they post the same content. While I think that the content they post on their Instagram is amazing and motivating for young people in agriculture, I think that having exactly the same content on both platforms is not the best if they are actively trying to grow their brand. I would recommend creating different content or posting longer more in-depth content either here or creating a blog and posting that kind of content there!


YOUTUBE:

While on Facebook and Instagram and even their podcast the NYFG show us what it is like to live a day in their lives with pictures and short videos, on their youtube they really show more of them and their personality as well as diving deeper and taking you also with them in their day to day lives and discussing the importance of agriculture. On this platform, they upload very regularly and have gained a following of 68.5k subscribers. I think that from watching some of their videos this is the area of their social media where the most help is needed. People are attracted to well-done work and while their content is great here it is lacking that level of professionalism that makes the videos great. A cool intro that they include with every video or aesthetic cover picture for the videos really elevates youtube videos. I think also some of the videos are long, which can cause fewer people to want to view them. 

TIKTOK:

Tik Tok is by far where the NYFG girls have gained the most following and popularity. With 315k followers and 5.3 million likes, they reach a lot of people on this platform. They post videos and do the ‘TikTok trends’ but put their own twists on them as well as advocating for their industry. On their TikTok, they also promote their youtube, but not their other socials, which I think is a lost opportunity.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

We need more young influencers who advocate for agriculture and show the truth about the industry to young people like the New York Farm Girls. Their content is fun and engaging for younger audiences, while there are things to work on and grow in, they have something amazing that they have started. Follow them to learn more and support their efforts in educating young people on all things ag!
