Rodeo Salinas

What is it?

The California Rodeo Salinas has been a long lived cowboy event for the last 110 years. This annual event keeps the spirit of the west alive and in doing so, helps raise money for local non-profits and economic impact for the city of Salinas. Due to COVID-19, they were unable to continue the celebration in 2020. The rodeo committee had tried to postpone the famous Rodeo from July to October in hopes of hosting the large community event.  Unfortunately their wishes were unable to come true and the 2020 Salinas Rodeo wasn’t able to take place. The organization looks forward to the community coming together July 15th-18th, 2021 for the 111th anniversary of this historic event.

Not only is the Salinas Rodeo an event for competitors, but it satisfies athletes, and spectators alike. The Salinas Rodeo is California’s top rodeo that both contestants and the audience look forward to each year. Salinas hosts a number of cowboy and cowgirl events, starting with saddle bronc riding, then bareback riding, bull riding, tie down roping, steer wrestling, team roping, and finishing with barrel racing.

What started over a 100 years ago continues to thrive with cowboys and cowgirls that come from all over the world to perform or attend this one of a kind rodeo.

Social Media

California Rodeo Salinas manages their new media communication well, using Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Youtube, and Pinterest. With different age groups, Salinas Rodeo is able to get their news and information out to just about everyone in a timely fashion. Although I am more comfortable with, and use Instagram on a regular basis, Facebook is still a fan favorite and continues to serve people information day in and day out.

Facebook

California Rodeo Salinas has a very up to date and ready facebook page. I believe this is a very strong new media that is used by many to keep up day after day. Facebook has been around the longest and serves for users 65 years and older.

Instagram

California Rodeo Salinas has a very flashy Instagram that can successfully grab your attention while scrolling. You can find and follow them @carodeosalinas.  With a catchy bio and updated pictures, in my opinion, it is hard to beat instagram. With less information and reading I believe instagram is the easiest to get a point across as far as a date or time. It is a simple look while scrolling and the point gets across.

Twitter

I don’t have a twitter or plan to get one, but it is another way to get information across. Twitter can compete with Instagram neck and neck and is a growing new media use, it is just my least favorite source of new media when thinking about Rodeo.

How to Improve

One idea I think would continue to help the California Rodeo Salinas new media would be to continue using Instagram and Facebook but adding something. I think they should use more live stream videos and possibly a Q & A (Questions and Answers). Maybe a giveaway of apparel or possibly tickets during this time. This would just involve the rodeo family more and keep them involved. With a facebook and Instagram page already created it wouldn’t be hard and could be a good call.

This picture above shows the true beauty the sport of Rodeo holds. This is a picture of mother bucking horses and their young following in their footsteps. This is the life they love to live. Rodeo isn’t just a sport for the contestants, but a sport for the stock as well. These horses are bred to buck and live to buck. They want to buck the contestants off as bad as the rider wants to stay on. They are fed well and properly taken care of and run as free as they want to. These young horses grow up to be buckers and live their dream and the sport of Rodeo continues to thrive.
